The Cohort 2 meetings run concurrently with the Cohort 3 meetings in an effort to provide space for residents to grow their knowledge around coastal issues and become more informed as to how they might take action in the process.

Nearly 20 residents, health experts, advocates, neighborhood organizers and others gathered as part of the LEAD the Coast initiatives Cohort 2 on Jan. 28 at the Castine Center in Mandeville to learn more about coastal issues facing the state. Liz Williams, Foundation for Louisiana’s Coastal Communities Resiliency Program Officer, explained land use and zoning issues as well as flood plain management as they related to changing coastal maps, with support from FFL Coastal Program Manager Rachelle Thomason.

Julia Kumari Drapkin of the group iSeeChange offered ideas on how to identify weather and climate effects on the environment at the local level and on a daily basis. Also, Vanessa Spinazola of Advocate Louisiana guided participants through the processes of coalition building.
