Foundation for Louisiana seeks a creative, dynamic and entrepreneurial Communications Manager with a sophisticated racial and social justice analysis who is passionate about telling the story of Louisiana. The Communications Manager will report to the Director of Strategic Initiatives and be responsible for evolving FFL’s communications strategy and narrative shift work. The Communications Manager will manage integrated marketing and communication products, such as print publications, web presence, social media, newsletters, CEO communications, and work with program staff to craft key messages to best support their work. This individual will be an ambassador for the organization, working to amplify the voices and experiences of underrepresented Louisianans, lead narrative shifts, and position FFL as a thought leader in the space of criminal justice reform, police accountability, support for LGBTQ Louisianans, and support for Louisiana communities navigating the impacts of sea level rise and climate change, and other areas of FFL’s work. Additionally, the Communications Manager will manage a part-time social media intern.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance Foundation for Louisiana’s mission, broaden awareness of its programs and results, and increase visibility across key stakeholder audiences
  • Lead FFL’s narrative shift work though facilitating campaign-based framing, messaging, and narrative development around FFL’s key issue areas, including criminal justice reform, racial justice, climate change, LGBTQ justice, and more
  • Collaborate with DSI and program staff to create messages and stories that advance FFL’s mission and programs around criminal justice reform, racial justice, climate impacts, LGBTQ justice, and more
  • Collaborate with senior leadership team and program staff to recognize external communications opportunities and execute appropriate strategies to take advantage of those opportunities
  • Pitch and place high-impact earned stories and perspective pieces that advance the work of FFL
  • Develop relationships with reporters and culture influencers
  • Serve as lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization
  • Develop and draft content and stories for online and print communications, including the annual report, collateral materials and electronic communications, the FFL website; and manage relationships with associated vendors
  • Lead the organization’s social media strategy and execution
  • Provide monthly reporting on digital analytics of website and social media engagement, page-views, and other relevant insights and trends; incorporate data into digital components of communications plans
  • Develop and manage communications infrastructure including editorial calendar, social media plan and calendar, and press and influencer database
  • Assist with preparation of talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed
  • Help shape organizational branding

Skills & Experience Required

  • 5 years minimum experience in the communications/marketing field
  • Deep knowledge of and respect for Louisiana and its people
  • Advanced analysis around racism, transphobia, homophobia and other systemic oppressions; ability to translate analysis into impactful and accessible communications
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior leadership, Board of Directors, donors and grantees
  • Demonstrated experience leading framing, messaging and narrative development that centers racial and social justice
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, writing, editing, and production of content press releases, print pieces, website and online materials
  • Experience with developing and implementing digital strategies and tactics across digital platforms
  • Expertise with online platforms: content management systems for web, e-newsletter services, and social media
  • Experience using web analytics and social media monitoring/measurement tools
  • Demonstrated effectiveness with all aspects of presswork (creating media advisories and press releases, pitching to reporters, training spokespeople etc.)
  • Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with reporters and editors, and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements
  • Strong management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers
  • Familiarity with organizational capacity building for communications
  • Innovative, energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; ability to function smoothly under strict deadlines and shifting priorities
  • Accountable team player who also works well independently

Skills & Experience Preferred

  • Working knowledge of intermediate- to advanced-level equipment (DSLR camera, video, audio recorder, microphones)
  • Comfort and experience using editing software (image, audio and video, post production)

Compensation
The Communications Manager is a 40 hour/week, full-time exempt position, and reports to the Director of Strategic Initiatives. Salary is between $52,000 and $57,000 DOE with a generous benefits package.
